Havret leads by two at Gleneagles

Golf Betting Lines

08/28/2008 - Perthshire, Scotland (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Gregory Havret carded a five-under-par 68 Thursday to take a two-stroke lead after the opening round of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

Havret's fellow Frenchman Christian Cevaer is one of four people tied for second place at minus-three. Cevaer shares second with Paul Broadhurst, Gary Orr and Robert Rock.

Nick Faldo's European Ryder Cup players and hopefuls had very average days on Thursday. This is the final event before the 10 automatic spots are filled, then Faldo will make his two picks.

Soren Hansen carded a two-under 71 and is tied for sixth, while Lee Westwood and last week's winner Darren Clarke are one stroke back at minus-one.

Havret played the back nine first on the PGA Centenary Course at The Gleneagles Hotel. He opened with a pair of pars before dropping in a birdie effort on the par-five 12th.

The Frenchman moved to minus-two with a birdie on the 14th. He turned in minus-three thanks to a birdie at 17.

Havret stumbled around the turn with a bogey on the first. He ran off three straight birdies from the fourth to jump into the lead at minus-five.

"I played really solid golf," Havret stated.

The 31-year-old is playing for the first time since the British Open.

"I've played five rounds of golf, one a week. I haven't played much. I usually play a lot. This time I tried to focus on my family," said Havret of what he did in his time off.

Cevaer was even-par through nine holes with two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine. He birdied the 12th to get back to minus-one.

After dropping a shot on the 15th, Cevaer bounced back with a birdie at 16. He closed with an eagle at the last to end in a share of second.

Broadhurst bogeyed two of the first four holes, but played bogey-free golf the rest of the way. He fought back to even-par with birdies at five and seven. He birdied the ninth, then posted birdies at 12 and 15 to end at minus-three.

Orr birdied three of his first five holes from the 10th to quickly get to minus-three. He moved to minus-four with a birdie at the first, but dropped back into a tie for second due to a bogey on the sixth.

"The wind was gusty today, it was tricky. Anything under par was a good score today," said Orr, who has tied for eighth and fourth in the last two events. "The last two weeks have been good."

Rock birdied each of the first two holes, but gave both those shots back as he tripped to a double-bogey on the par-three sixth. He rolled in another birdie at the ninth.

Around the turn, he dropped in birdies on 12 and 14 to get to minus-three. However, Rock tripped to a bogey on the 15th, but he bounced right back to birdie 16 to finish at minus-three.

Hansen was joined in sixth place at minus-two by Bradley Dredge, Benoit Teilleria, Anthony Wall, Gregory Bourdy, Martin Wiegele and Jose-Filipe Lima.

Ross Fisher, one of three players who could bump Oliver Wilson from the 10th qualifying spot on the European Ryder Cup points list, is among the group of players tied with Clarke and Westwood in 13th at one-under 72.

Wilson is tied for 73rd at three-over-par 76.
